Tattoo Removal Options

Getting a tattoo removed has been thought to be a painful experience. Tattoo removal has been painful in the past, but with today's technology it isn't as bad as what many people believe. There are two different ways to get tattoos removed that are becoming very popular. One is laser technology and the other is light-based technology.

In both techniques, light energy is used to destroy the ink in the tattoo. The ink in the skin will absorb the energy from the light, causing it to break up. Once your body absorbs the ink, it is then passed through your body and is filtered. This is very safe because the ink is broken down to a micro-size and it is easily passed through the body.

This technique is very similar to hair removal procedures. The doctors who perform the surgery hold a wand that produces the appearance of a "black light." The wand releases pulses of light that are aimed at the specific location of the ink. The wand is usually held right up close to the tattoo for maximum effectiveness.

Some people have described this experience as similar to someone holding a rubber band to your skin and popping it constantly against that area. If you have a large tattoo, this process can be a bit more painful. Depending on where your tattoo is located, removal may be more painful due to sensitive spots on your body. If your tattoo is in an area where there is very little muscle, you may want to have the area numbed before beginning the removal process.

Both laser and light treatments for tattoo removals are very similar. They both get the job done right. With both procedures, the doctor will apply a cooling gel over the tattoo to cool the skin and conduct the energy of the light. This helps to draw the light to the specific area to be treated, while at the same time protecting your skin. This gel is cool to the touch, and will protect your skin from damage while breaking down the ink.

If you are thinking about getting a tattoo removed, it's best to consider both of the available options. They are both expensive and each has its own risks. Depending on how large your tattoo is and which procedure you choose, you may have to stay overnight in the hospital to make sure no complications occur. It is generally within the first 24 hours when any signs of complications become apparent. Both procedures, light and laser, are effective ways to have a tattoo removed, but you will still need to think about your options and the possible consequences before making a final decision.
